Criss-crossed by rivers and dotted with wetlands, European geography poses significant military challenges and led the German Wehrmacht to develop the Schwimmwagen, an amphibious vehicle based upon the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Kübelwagen. With a 4-cylinder gasoline engine capable of 25hp, the Schwimmwagen featured the 80km/h top speed on ground. The rear three-bladed screw propeller was lowered manually using a rod and provided water speed up to 10km/ h. While paucity of materials meant many Schwimmwagens used 133mm tyres, those with wider 200mm tyres enjoyed superior off-road performance.
